Let's cut to the truth...

Today is one of those days that makes all the hard work worth it! I'm on set, peeping through the camera, and reviewing my shot list. We're doing a crucial reshoot/shoot for the intro scene of Episode 1, and I can barely contain my excitement.

The Creative Process

When I start any project, I always begin with the end in mind. I see the final scene, the last moment, the culmination of the story. If that ending doesn't make me want to jump out of my seat with some sort of emotion, I know I don't have something worth telling. Once I've got that spark, I tackle the meat of the project.

The Edit Reveals Itself

But here's the thing: what you envision, what you write, what you film – it's all just a starting point. The true magic happens in the edit. It's where the project reveals itself to you, often in ways you didn't anticipate. And that's when the intro scene becomes clear. Until then, I leave it open, letting the story unfold and guide me.

Today’s Mission

Now that I know what the intro needs to be, I'm excited to bring it to life. We're shooting the first half of the intro today, and I couldn't be more thrilled. There's still a lot to do, but I know it'll be worth it.

I'll be back on Saturday with updates from the front lines. In the meantime, don't forget to check out the new section of the website: TRYHARD COMMAND CENTER: Mission Briefing. It's your frontline access to the latest updates, character reveals, and behind-the-scenes content.

Stay tuned, and let's make this happen!

🎞️ Audition1999 • Horror / Romance • 1h 53m

🍿 Sip, watch, and geek out...Why I love Audition:

There was a stretch of time when Japanese horror was everywhere — tons of titles flooding in. Like all waves, it peaked with a few greats… then tapered off.

But one title never stopped popping up from fans I trusted: Audition.

I remember the exact night — it was early October, cold outside, leaves turning. My mom (also a huge cinephile) and I grabbed popcorn, sat down, and hit play. And from that moment on, Audition floored me.

The first thing that hit me was the sound design. The audio mixing in this film doesn’t just support the visuals — it’s a character. It performs. It breathes. It guides the dread.

That movie literally rewired how I think about sound.Ever since then, in every project I make — once the visuals are locked — I shut it all off and work blindly on the sound. I make sure the sound performs. That mindset? Came from Audition.

The pacing is another beast entirely. This movie is a slow burn. Like, truly. Two-thirds in, I almost said, “Where is this going?” But I was hooked. It pulled me in with the quiet.

And then…

💥 BAM.It collapses in on itself in the final act with a tonal shift that is unreal.

I will never look at piano wire the same way again.

This is one of the most horrific, suspenseful, dread-filled third acts I’ve ever seen.

I’ve only watched it twice in 15+ years — and that’s enough. It sticks. Deep.

If you’re into horror, psychology, or filmmaking in general…You owe it to yourself to watch Audition.

And if you do — come back and tell me what you thought. I’d love to hear it.

Summary of

A lonely widower holds a fake audition to find a new wife — only to discover the woman he falls for harbors a horrifying secret. What begins as a quiet drama becomes one of the most disturbing horror experiences of all time.

Two Interesting Facts About This Grand Fan Favorite:

  1. Audition was originally marketed in Japan as a romantic drama, completely hiding its horrific twist.

  2. Director Takashi Miike drew inspiration from Hitchcock — but pushed it far into surreal, boundary-breaking territory.

🎭 Interesting Fact About an Actor/Actress:

  • Eihi Shiina, who plays the haunting lead, was originally a fashion model with no horror experience — and delivered one of the most disturbing performances in horror cinema history.

🎬 Iconic Scene From the Film:

  • The infamous “Kiri kiri kiri...” scene — needle in hand, bag on the floor, an eerie calm — is pure psychological torture in cinematic form.

📝 What the Critics Say:

“Unbearably intense... and unforgettable.” – The Guardian“Miike’s masterpiece lingers under your skin.” – Film Threat“Starts like Sleepless in Seattle, ends like Hellraiser.” – Time Out

🎬 The Streets of San Francisco1972 • Drama • 5 Seasons

Pick up your coffee cups...Why I love the Series The Streets of San Francisco:

Man, I gotta tell you — this series has one of the best intro soundtracks ever. I’d put it right up there with The Rockford Files or Hawaii Five-O. Composer Patrick Williams delivered something special with that theme — and the visuals in the intro are just as iconic.

🔎 TRYHARD COMPANY fans: One of our episode intros is a full-on throwback to The Streets of San Francisco. You’ll be able to check it out in the Command Center — going live soon. I’ll post the homage clip there. It’s so good.

So what makes The Streets of San Francisco great to me?

It’s the chemistry.Michael Douglas and Karl Malden — two fantastic actors absolutely locked in at their prime. Their dynamic feels like father and son, and honestly, it’s what elevates the show far beyond your average crime procedural.

I’ve realized, looking back, the shows I love most are about the characters. I’d be perfectly happy sitting in the back seat, sipping coffee from a street vendor, eating a bagel, and listening to those two banter back and forth on a stakeout. That’s the magic.

Story-wise? Sure, we’ve seen most of these cases before — but that’s not the point. It’s about the ride. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger popped in for an episode (season 5, I believe). It’s packed with ‘70s guest stars that are always fun to spot.

What sets this apart — like Columbo, Beretta, Kojak, Magnum P.I., or The Rockford Files — is the writing. It was all about the characters. The action was grounded in personalities you wanted to spend time with.

And yeah — that intro? I could watch it 100 times a day.

If you haven’t seen The Streets of San Francisco, give it a watch. Start with the intro. Then dive into a couple episodes -- it's comfort food — but really well done.

Summary of

A gritty, character-driven police procedural set in the heart of San Francisco, this classic series follows seasoned detective Lt. Mike Stone (Karl Malden) and his young partner Steve Keller (Michael Douglas) as they tackle crime, corruption, and the personal cost of justice.

Two Interesting Facts About This Grand Fan Favorite:

  1. This was one of Michael Douglas’s breakout roles before One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest launched him into stardom.

  2. The show was shot entirely on location in San Francisco — something rare at the time and part of what gave it its gritty realism.

🎭 Interesting Fact About an Actor/Actress:

  • Karl Malden — already an Oscar-winner — turned down numerous movie roles to dedicate himself fully to this series. He believed in using TV to tell “real stories about real people.”

🎬 Iconic Scene From the Series:

  • The episode “Trail of Terror” features a harrowing scene of Stone and Keller navigating a collapsing warehouse — a tense, cinematic moment that pushed 1970s TV production limits.

📝 What the Critics Say:

“A gritty and emotional cop show that paved the way for modern crime dramas.” – TV Guide“Karl Malden brings humanity and gravitas to the badge.” – Los Angeles Times“The city was a character, and the show never forgot it.” – San Francisco Chronicle
