Let's cut to the truth...
As a filmmaker I learned that,
...as a child, I spent countless hours in movie theaters, mesmerized by iconic films like JAWS, Star Wars, and Alien. These movies transported me to new worlds, sparked my imagination, and ignited a lifelong passion for storytelling. But movies can be more than just entertainment. Roger Ebert, my favorite film critic, believed that cinema has the power to help us understand the human experience, foster empathy, and bridge cultural divides. I share his conviction.
The Oscars, in their purest form, celebrate excellence in filmmaking, recognizing the innovative spirit and creative risk-taking that define our industry. They're a tribute to the unsung heroes behind the camera, the editors, screenwriters, and cinematographers who bring stories to life. I cherish memories of discovering hidden gems like Ordinary People and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which became an all-time favorite, via the Oscars. I also discovered the animated movie FLOW and The SUBSTANCE…, both of which were never on my radar until the Oscars brought them to light. Both are now in my top 100 movies of all time.
Without the Oscars shining a light on these films, which most people (including myself) had never heard of, I would have never seen them. I would have missed out on how profoundly those movies moved me. For that reason alone, I want the Oscars to never stop searching for the gems that are not making millions of dollars but still have something to share.
Of course, the Oscars have evolved over time, and their relevance is often debated. But for me, they'll always represent a celebration of cinematic artistry and the power of storytelling to transform and inspire us.
As a filmmaker, creating work that resonates is what truly matters. Winning an Oscar or an Independent Spirit Award, which celebrates innovative indie filmmaking, would be an incredible honor. I'd be thrilled to stand on stage, recognized by fellow filmmakers, and thank my loved ones - Mom, Dad, Nicole, Matt, Lorie and Dan - who've supported me throughout my journey.
I'm proud of TRYHARD COMPANY, and I hope you'll join me on this journey. Here's to making movies that matter, in all shapes, sizes, and genres. Cheers!
