Code Red: Filmmaking - Directors's Thoughts
Step into the mind of the director as we explore the creative process behind TRYHARD COMPANY, with personal reflections, insights, and inspirations.
Let’s cut to the truth...
Post-production is a battlefield — and right now, we’re fighting on every front.
While the TRYHARD COMMAND CENTER launches, the real work is happening deep inside Final Cut Pro X — shot by shot, sound by sound, building six brutal, claustrophobic episodes. It’s not just cutting scenes — it’s sculpting tension.
Sound design, color grading, effects passes — they all live under the same weight of obsession. Right now, there’s no crew, no assistants. Just a mohawked warrior on screen... and a director pushing pixels and decibels like it's war.

Sound design, color grading, effects passes — they all live under the same weight of obsession. Right now, there’s no crew, no assistants. Just a mohawked warrior on screen... and a director pushing pixels and decibels like it's war.
The countdown to final delivery has begun — and every second is a decision that shapes the world of TANK, BULLDOZER, and the squad.
This is what it means to go indie. This is what it means to TRYHARD.

Why I Love ROMEO is BLEEDING:
What a powerhouse of a movie.
Gary Oldman, Lena Olin, Juliette Lewis, Annabella Sciorra, Roy Scheider — I mean, come on. That cast alone? You already know this one’s going to hit.
Look — I consider Gary Oldman one of the greatest actors of all time. He can play anything, and he always brings it. Take his role as a drug dealer in True Romance — just a few minutes on screen, but he owned it. That’s why I tell every actor I work with: I don’t care if you’ve got one minute or one hour — throw everything into it. Make it unforgettable.
And yet, as good as Oldman is in Romeo Is Bleeding... Lena Olin almost blows him off the screen. Her performance is unhinged in the best way — sexy, terrifying, fearless.

She’s one of the most dangerous characters I’ve ever seen, and I mean that as a compliment. Musclebound or not, anyone would be scared of her.
This movie is wild. It’s chaotic, noir-soaked, over the top — and totally electric. If you’ve never seen it, you’re missing out. It’s a cult classic for a reason. Watch it for the acting. Watch it for the cinematography. Watch it for how weird and bold it is.
Because no one remembers run-of-the-mill.
And Romeo Is Bleeding? It stands way out.
📜 Summary of this gritty, hyper-stylized crime thriller, corrupt NYPD detective Jack Grimaldi (Gary Oldman) finds himself spiraling into a violent web of seduction and betrayal. Tasked with protecting a ruthless Russian assassin (Lena Olin), Jack's double life and unchecked desires pull him deeper into a fatal game of deception — where love, loyalty, and survival are all on the line.
“Over-the-top noir done with guts and style.” – The Washington Post“Gary Oldman and Lena Olin give performances that drip with danger.” – Entertainment Weekly“A messy masterpiece — beautiful, brutal, and unforgettable.” – The AV Club
🧩 Two Interesting Facts about this Grand Fan Favorite:
The film’s title is a nod to a Tom Waits song, and its world feels just as smoky and doomed as his lyrics.
Despite polarizing critics at release, the film has developed a cult following for its noir dialogue, bold performances, and operatic descent into chaos.
🎭 Interesting Fact About an Actor:Lena Olin performed nearly all of her own stunts, including a now-iconic scene where she straddles a tied-up Gary Oldman with a gun — while dangling upside-down. Her performance is frequently ranked among the most dangerous femme fatales in modern noir.
🎬 Iconic Scene from the Film:The diner scene where Jack breaks the fourth wall, narrating his fall from grace while visually unraveling in real time — a pitch-perfect blend of noir monologue and visual breakdown.
🗞️ What the Critics Say:
“Romeo Is Bleeding is fever-dream noir — sweaty, sharp, and sleazy in the best way.” – Empire “Lena Olin is magnetic. A femme fatale for the ages.” – Chicago Sun-Times “A cult classic in the making. You don’t watch it — you sink into it.” – The Guardian

Why I Love: Hill Street Blues
What can I tell you?
This series was iconic. It hit at a time when cop dramas were getting stale — and then Hill Street Blues came in and redefined what television could be. It was raw. It was human. And it was unlike anything else at the time.
What blew me away was the casting. Whoever did that? Masterclass. You had a dozen-plus actors — most of them not well-known — and yet not a single weak link in the lineup. Every character had their own rhythm. Their own flaws. Their own moral war. And they felt real.
That’s the heart of it — everyone was trying to do the right thing… and sometimes failing. Because that’s who we are as people. We stumble. We fight. We try.
Now, I have a theory: every great piece of work — a film, a series, a song — it has to have one unforgettable thing. That scene. That moment. That sound. And this show? It had three.
The biggest? The theme. That Mike Post score? Man, that piano hits and everyone — even folks who never watched the show — they know it. That’s how powerful it was. That’s legacy stuff. Like the Jaws theme. Or “E.T. phone home.” You hear it, and boom — it lives in your bones.
And I gotta talk about the way it was shot. No static cameras. No sterile setups. You walked through chaos with those cops. The show opened every day with roll call — Sergeant Esterhaus laying down the law — and closed it with the legendary: “Let’s be careful out there.” Gave you chills.
If you're younger and used to the fast pace of modern TV, I don’t know if it’ll grab you the same way. But if you give it a shot — really watch the characters, the stories, the heart of it all — I think you’ll get why it holds up.
I love this series. It made its mark. And if you’re in this game — writing, directing, acting — you owe it to yourself to study Hill Street Blues.
📜 Summary of A gritty, groundbreaking police procedural that changed television forever. Hill Street Blues follows the lives — both professional and personal — of officers and detectives at an inner-city police precinct. With overlapping storylines, flawed heroes, and raw humanity, the show blended social realism with bold innovation.
🧩 Two Interesting Facts about this Grand Fan Favorite:
It was one of the first shows to use ensemble storytelling and overlapping dialogue — paving the way for future prestige dramas.
Its iconic theme song by Mike Post won a Grammy and became one of the most recognizable in TV history.
🎭 Interesting Fact About an Actor: Daniel J. Travanti, who played Captain Furillo, was originally reluctant to take the role — but went on to win a Golden Globe and two Emmys for his performance.
🎬 Iconic Scene from the Series: The very first roll call in the pilot episode set the tone — both chaotic and compassionate — and delivered the immortal line: “Let’s be careful out there.”
🗞️ What the Critics Say: “A brilliant, unsentimental ensemble drama that raised the bar for TV storytelling.” – The New York Times “TV's first adult cop show.” – Los Angeles Times “Still the gold standard for how to humanize the badge.” – AV Club
